Six Drinks That Make You Look Classy (and are actually good)

One of my hobbies is mixology; I love to entertain and make drinks for friends. One of the side effects of this is that I know a lot of random drink recipes. I also know that most drinks people order to look cool taste horrible.

These drinks aren't that advanced, but being lesser known means that people assume you know classy cocktails. Just be prepared to explain the recipe.

Pictured: Clip art; not a drink I'm going to talk about. Though it looks kind of like a 6/10 mojito.

1. Last Word

One of my personal favorites. Most bars can do this one; you mainly need to check if they have chartreuse. This is a light, citrus-y drink that is good year round.

How to Make: Equal parts green chartreuse, gin, cherry liqueur and lime juice. Shake and serve.

2. Ramos Gin Fizz

Okay, this one is pretty advanced and many bars aren't going to serve it. But it's so delicious, creamy and sweet that it's worth just getting the ingredients and making yourself.

How to Make: Four parts gin, one part heavy cream, one part each lemon and lime juice, one and a half part simple syrup, a dash of orange flower water and one egg white. Shake and pour into a glass, leaving some room. Then add club soda to top off.

3. Gibson

Basically a martini with an onion instead of a lemon twist or olive. The cocktail onion adds a bit of sweetness and tartness to the drink. It's not for everyone though.

How to Make: Whatever ratio of gin and dry vermouth you like plus a cocktail onion. Stir and serve.

4. Bellini

Okay, this is better known, but you should try it if you haven't already. Instead of a mimosa, these are so good at a brunch.

How to Make: Instead of orange juice, add peach puree to prosecco/champagne like you would a mimosa. Optionally, add some raspberry as well for a delicious finish.

5. Chi Chi

Like a piña colada, but with vodka, a chi chi is a nice alternative for a tropical and refreshing drink. The use of vodka instead of rum also changes the taste profile to be sweeter and lighter.

How to Make: Two parts vodka, four parts pineapple juice, one part cream of coconut. Shake and serve. Garnish with pineapple and a cherry if you are so inclined.

6. Death in the Afternoon

Pioneered by none other than Ernest Hemingway, this champagne based drink is a bit boozier than typical; making it a good nightcap or evening drink.

How to Make: Put about an ounce or so of absinthe (preferably red) in a champagne flute. Optionally add a cherry. Top with champagne and serve.
