The Timekeeper's Proposal

Today, I unleash a new kind of curse
that will forever plague mankind.
Its backbone is a small fiction
to which humanity is already blind.
With this, one can measure eternity:
Observed by all and affected by few.
Leaving a crystalized past behind
while what's beyond creeps into view.
With each turn of the device's gears
something untouchable is spent.
With precision, plans are proposed
transforming future to mere assent.
Lurching forward every second,
the contraption's tick never ends.
Delegate your minutes all you want;
time will never be your friend.
The machine will help and hurt many.
There's no doubt of that in my mind.
But under foul or unseen circumstance
the apparatus will leave everyone behind.
Enough have accepted the concept
so come forward to choose your wrist.
You may not wish to make a purchase
but I'm afraid your colleagues will insist.
