As December rolls around, it is time for holiday cheer and merriment (unless you are a Jehovah's Witness or something similar, in which case, carry on with the grind). However, no matter your tradition, you are probably familiar with the legend that is Santa Claus.

He goes by many aliases and has had many retellings, but the main brush strokes of the "modern" Santa are the same that they've always been. From their base of operations in the North Pole, Santa is tasked with getting presents to all the good children of the world. How is Santa able to conquer such a herculian task? Why, due to his devoted labor force of elves.
If it sounds ridiculous, that's because it is. But there is more truth to it than most give it credit for. After all, presents do still show up every Christmas Eve. And Santa gets the credit.
Belief (especially the belief of a child) is a very powerful thing. It is enough to stop parents from telling their children that they purchased their presents. It is powerful enough for the world's TV stations to refuse to deny his existence. Santa doesn't have to defend his existence when the world is more than willing to enshrine it.
At this point, Santa's physical existence is merely a foregone formality. It doesn't matter whether he actually exists or if there is a workshop in the North Pole. For all practical purposes, he does exist. And, as the workforce that makes the legend possible, WE ARE SANTA'S ELVES.
